Florida “Move Over Law” Enforced on Jacksonville Roadways in 2014

Florida’s “Move Over Law” adds a major change for 2014 of which drivers in Jacksonville and North Florida should be aware. Most Florida motorists already know the “Move Over Law” requires them to slow down or move over when they see flashing red or blue lights on the side of the road. Beginning January 1, 2014,  yellow lights have been added as well with the implementation of the “Move Over Law.”

This new law requires drivers to move over one lane OR slow down to 20mph below the speed limit when workers are along the road.

The “Move Over Law” is designed to protect law enforcement and transportation employees who may be working on the side of busy roadways. First Coast News provides examples of why the “Move Over Law” was introduced:
  • Trooper Daniel Morley was nearly struck by a passing vehicle while talking to a motorist on the side of a roadway, but survived a very “close call (video of the incident is available here).”
  • Trooper Grady Lee was severely injured while trying to help a driver whose vehicle had broken down on the side of the road in March 2013.
  • Trooper Felecia Andrews was critically injured on Dec. 29, 2013 in Broward County while investigating a crash along I-95.
  • Trooper Patrick Ambroise died on the Florida Turnpike when he was struck while in the emergency lane. His squad car caught fire with him trapped inside.

Police told CBS 12 in West Palm Beach that drivers who violate the “Move Over Law ” may receive warnings for the first couple of weeks of the New Year, but after that tickets start at $160.00 and above, depending on the violation.  Drive safely to avoid accidents and personal injury to yourself and others!

The Law Offices of Paul J. Healy have served the residents of Jacksonville and the North Florida counties of Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns since 1989.
